I can't say the same when I looked into the faces of those destitute orphans when I was living in Kenya for two years. The hope of God providing them with a future was all they had and the last thing you wanna do is slap them on the face and say agnostics care about you more. They want a miracle and God is a more plausible universal hope than the philosophy of an agnostic so certain of uncertainties. They're children, not philosophers. His poetry speaks not only of India but of Asia , africa , latin america and other underprivileged nations of the world. I referred the translation of his poem MERA SAFAR to a japanese traveller once and to my suprise the fellow immediately identified with the imagery and context of the poem and felt amused. This is the quality of world class literature and visionary intellectuals who transcend borders and appeal to the basic feelings of a human being irrespective of caste ,creed , colour , religion or territory .I rate Ali Sardar Jafri in this category. Being totally against war and nuclear arsenals ,he joins the class of poets like Pablo Neruda who remained his personal friend.Jafri was a freedom fighter , patriot and product of what is known as Ganga Jamuna Tehzeeb of Awadh a totally tolerant and secular outlook where people celebrate Diwali and Idd with same REVERENCE .
